Resources

The Planning team provides guidance and support for strategic planning efforts and can assist units and departments in the following ways: preparing for or responding to recommendations from the institutional Program Review process; facilitating meetings and other types of interactions with key stakeholders and constituents; offering context and insight into the larger University picture; facilitating connections with other relevant offices and resources; and reviewing and providing feedback on draft plans.

The Planning team works with units and departments to create a customizable set of resources which have been organized around a four-step process by which the team guides strategic planning efforts. The team can engage in some or all of the specific tasks supporting each phase, depending on where the department is in the process and what support would be most appropriate:

Four Step Strategic Planning Process

Assess

Where is your department now?

In this phase of strategic planning, the department reviews its current state, gathers information, and analyzes data through several levels including self-study, institutional-study, and environmental-study. The following types of activities help the department better understand its current environment:  key issues review (building on the Program Review process); self-study (building on the Program Review process); peer benchmarking; information interviews, stakeholder surveys, and focus groups; and assessments such as SWOT analysis.

Develop

Where do you want to be?

In this phase, the department considers a stakeholder engagement plan, including the possibility of a retreat; revisits or determines its mission, values, and vision; identifies goals and objectives; determines key performance indicators and success factors by which the plan will be measured; and drafts the strategic plan document.

Execute

How are you going to get there?

In this phase, the department initiates actions steps and begins to implement plans by identifying strategies and tactics that will progress the department towards its goals; identifying deliverables, milestones, and timelines to keep the plan on track; pinpointing responsible parties for each phase of implementation to ensure accountability; and determining support and resources needed to achieve the goals of the plan.

Measure

How will you know if you are successful?

In this phase, the department analyzes and assesses its metrics for success and monitors progress of the implementation of the strategic plan. Progress is visualized through scorecards and dashboards and communicated through a variety of stakeholder updates. Finally, the department evaluates the entire process in general, refining it in preparation for the next round of strategic planning.
